We have just launched a new add-on service for customers on Iridium monthly contracts, and it's one we think will make a real difference to the way many of you use your satellite phone or hotspot.
From now on, customers on a Standard Iridium Pay Monthly Plan can add a dedicated local number in more than 25 countries for as little as $6 per month, plus a straightforward per-minute rate depending on your region.
Here is everything you need to know.
What Is the Iridium Local Number Add-On?
When you use an Iridium satellite phone or hotspot, the number associated with your SIM is an Iridium network number. It works globally, which is the whole point, but it is not a number that people in, say, the UK or France would recognise as a local one. Calls to your Iridium number from a mobile or landline can carry international calling costs for the person ringing you, which can create friction for clients, colleagues, or family members trying to reach you.
The Local Number Add-On solves that. It gives you a dedicated local number in your chosen country, routed directly to your Iridium device. Anyone calling that number pays a standard local rate from their end. You receive the call on your satellite device, wherever in the world you happen to be.
It is a simple, practical feature that removes one of the few remaining barriers to using Iridium as a primary or backup communication tool.
Who Is This Available For?
The Local Number Add-On is available to customers on any of the following GTC Iridium monthly plans:
- Standard Iridium Satellite Phone Pay Monthly Plans (for Iridium handheld devices such as the Iridium 9555 and Iridium Extreme)
- Iridium GO! exec Pay Monthly Plans
- Iridium GO! Standard Pay Monthly Plans
Whether you are using a handheld satellite phone or one of the Iridium GO! hotspot devices that turns satellite connectivity into Wi-Fi for multiple users, you can now add a local number to your plan.
Pricing at a Glance
The add-on costs $6 per month as a base fee, with per-minute rates that vary by country band:
- Band A $2.50/min France, Netherlands, Canada, Czech Republic, Ireland, Lithuania, Slovakia, United Kingdom, Belgium, Israel, Luxembourg, Slovenia
- Band B $2.75/min Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Spain
- Band C $3.20/min Latvia, Poland, Romania, Greece, Australia, Croatia, South Africa, Portugal
The per-minute rate applies to calls routed through your local number to your Iridium device. For anyone calling you from within that country, it is simply a local call on their end.
Why This Matters in Practice
Satellite communication has always excelled at keeping people connected in places where nothing else works. But one persistent friction point has been accessibility from the other direction: making it easy for people on conventional phones to reach you without worrying about international call charges.
Consider a few practical scenarios:
- Remote project managers and field teams. If you are overseeing operations in a remote location and your main office is in the UK, a UK local number means your team can call you as they would any colleague, without incurring international fees or needing to know your Iridium network number.
- Maritime and offshore crews. Vessels operating in coastal or offshore waters often need to maintain contact with port agents, operators, and suppliers in a specific country. A local number in that country makes those incoming calls straightforward and cost-effective for the caller.
- Journalists, researchers, and aid workers. People working in the field for extended periods frequently need to be reachable by editors, institutions, or partner organisations back home. A local number in your home country means staying reachable without putting the cost burden on whoever needs to call you.
- Seasonal and expedition use. If you are planning an extended trip to a remote area and want family members to be able to call you without worrying about international rates, a local number in your home country adds a layer of accessibility that makes a real difference.
- Business travellers and expedition guides. Clients and contacts who need to reach you should not need to think about whether they are making an international call. A local number removes that friction entirely.
How It Works Alongside Your Existing Plan
The Local Number Add-On sits alongside your standard Iridium monthly plan. Your Iridium network number continues to function as normal for outbound calls, inbound calls to that number, and all other standard features of your plan. The local number simply gives callers in your chosen country an additional, locally familiar way to reach your device.
Incoming calls via the local number do not count against your inclusive minute allowance in the way outbound calls do. The caller pays their standard local rate; the per-minute rate on the add-on applies to how those calls are routed through to your Iridium device.
