The SPOT X is a rugged two-way satellite messenger designed to keep you connected when mobile coverage becomes unreliable or disappears completely. It provides a practical way to exchange messages, share your location and request assistance while travelling, working or exploring beyond the reach of terrestrial networks.
Ideal for hiking, overlanding, expeditions, remote fieldwork and lone-worker safety, the SPOT X offers added reassurance wherever conventional communication cannot be relied upon.
Two-Way Messaging Beyond Mobile Coverage
Stay in contact with family, friends or colleagues by exchanging satellite messages with compatible mobile numbers and email addresses. Unlike one-way tracking devices, SPOT X allows recipients to reply, helping you maintain a genuine two-way conversation while off-grid.
Each device has its own dedicated mobile number, enabling approved contacts to initiate a message directly to the handset rather than waiting for the SPOT X user to make contact first.
Use It with Your Phone or On Its Own
SPOT X can connect to a compatible smartphone through Bluetooth and the SPOT X app, giving you convenient access to your phone’s contacts and keyboard. This makes composing and managing messages feel familiar and straightforward.
When carrying a smartphone is not practical, the SPOT X can also operate independently using its built-in screen and physical keyboard. This makes it a dependable standalone communication tool for demanding outdoor and professional environments.
Added Reassurance in Remote Locations
In a serious or life-threatening emergency, the SPOT X can send an SOS request to a 24-hour search and rescue coordination service. Two-way messaging allows you to provide further information about the situation and receive confirmation that assistance is being arranged.
Location tracking can also help selected contacts or operational teams follow your progress, making the device suitable for remote journeys, outdoor adventures and the management of lone or mobile workers.
Important Service Information
An active SPOT service subscription is required to use the device’s satellite messaging, tracking and SOS services. For the most reliable satellite connection, the SPOT X should be used outdoors with a clear and unobstructed view of the sky.
Upgrade your SPOT Gen3 to SPOT X Unlimited Service Plan
SPOT will transfer your existing SPOT Gen3 service plan, to the SPOT X unlimited plan for the remainder of your SPOT Gen3 service term. Also, the activation fee for the SPOT X plan is waived!
Follow the instructions below to upgrade your SPOT Gen3:
- Purchase our SPOT X messenger
- Log-in to your SPOT account in Myaccount
- Click on 'My Devices' and select your SPOT Gen3 device and then select 'Upgrade Your SPOT Device'.
You will only need the ESN and Auth Code for both your SPOT Gen3 and SPOT X device to complete the upgrade.

I've been using this for three months on and off - unfortunately I've been ill so have not been able to get out as much as usual. But I've used the device on a few walks, and the messaging service appears to work well, although using the keyboard takes a bit of getting used to. It was very easy to set up, although the GPS initially took about 3.5 hours to connect the first time I used it. Since then I've had no problems connecting to GPS. Although the SPOT X is larger than some sat comms devices, it's pretty lightweight and very robust. I'm glad I bought the SPOT X. It adds an important extra layer of security in remote areas, and keeps loved ones informed of where I am.
