FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for setup, subscriptions, messaging, tracking, and SOS.

Do I need an active subscription to use inReach?

Yes. Two-way messaging, tracking, and SOS require an active satellite subscription. If you are not sure which plan suits your use, GTC can help you match message allowance and tracking frequency.

What is the main difference between Mini 2 and the Mini 3 series?

Mini 2 is a proven button-driven device with a monochrome display. The Mini 3 series adds a colour touchscreen and a more modern interface, while keeping the core inReach features: two-way messaging, tracking, and SOS.

Can I message from my phone instead of typing on the device?

Yes. Pairing with the Garmin Messenger app gives you a smoother messaging experience, including using your phone keyboard, while the inReach device handles the satellite link when needed.

Do preset messages count toward my allowance?

Many plans support preset check-in style messages that do not count toward the monthly message allowance. Exact plan behaviour depends on the subscription tier.

How does SOS work on the inReach Mini series?

When you trigger SOS, the device sends your location and opens an interactive emergency message thread so responders can gather details and coordinate help. Keep the device powered and with a clear view of the sky where possible.

Is the inReach Mini waterproof?

Mini 2 is rated IPX7. The Mini 3 series is rated IP67. Both are designed for harsh outdoor use, but it is still smart to rinse and dry after saltwater exposure.

Which device should I choose for longer trips?

Start with how often you track and how much you message. If you run frequent tracking, battery life becomes the deciding factor. If you want the newest interface and touchscreen workflow, look at the Mini 3 series.

Can I get weather forecasts on an inReach?

Yes. Weather forecasts can be requested on the device. Availability and usage may depend on your subscription and settings.

How do I pick the right airtime plan?

Think in two parts: messaging volume and tracking frequency. Light messaging and occasional tracking can suit a smaller plan. Frequent tracking and two-way comms benefit from a larger allowance.
