SPOT LLC, a subsidiary of Globalstar, Inc. today announced that the United States Forest Service recently purchased 6,000 SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger devices, commonly referred to as SEND units, for the purpose of employee safety. In addition to the devices, the U.S. Forest Service has purchased a year of service provided by the Globalstar satellite network.

The SPOT devices are rugged, pocket-sized satellite-based personal trackers that work in places where cell phones and two way radios fail.

SPOT messengers have initiated more than 1,800 rescues worldwide since Globalstar introduced the product in 2007. Outside Magazine recently named SPOT one of the Most Influential Outdoor Gear Items of all-time, placing it in the same category with the Swiss Army Knife and the Jeep S.U.V.
