Satellite IoT for utilities & energy

Remote infrastructure still needs reliable data.

Energy and utility infrastructure is often distributed across large geographic areas, including locations where cellular or fixed-line connectivity is limited, unreliable or simply unavailable.

Satellite IoT and machine-to-machine connectivity can provide another route for transmitting location, equipment status and operational data from remote assets. The right hardware can be integrated into everything from monitoring equipment to purpose-built field systems.

01

Connect beyond cellular coverage

Extend data transmission to infrastructure located outside dependable terrestrial communications networks.

02

Monitor remote assets

Transmit location, equipment status and other operational information from difficult-to-reach locations.

03

Build satellite into your system

Compact modem and transceiver modules can be integrated into dedicated IoT and monitoring hardware.

Recommended for utilities & energy

Satellite hardware for remote monitoring and IoT.

From ready-to-deploy asset monitoring to compact embedded satellite modules, these solutions provide different ways to connect infrastructure and transmit data beyond cellular coverage.

SmartOne C Satellite Tracker
Satellite monitoring

SmartOne C

A rugged Globalstar-connected device for transmitting GPS location, movement and status information from remote equipment and assets beyond cellular coverage.

Best for: monitoring remote equipment, plant, tanks and other infrastructure where a complete tracking device is preferable to an embedded modem.

Iridium 9603-N Short Burst Data Transceiver
Iridium SBD transceiver

Iridium 9603-N

A compact two-way Short Burst Data transceiver designed for integration into IoT, telemetry and machine-to-machine applications using the global Iridium satellite network.

Best for: developers and system integrators building compact monitoring, control or telemetry equipment that needs global two-way satellite data.

Globalstar STX-3 Simplex Modem
Globalstar simplex modem

Globalstar STX-3

A compact, low-power simplex satellite module designed to be integrated into custom IoT hardware for transmitting small amounts of data from remote equipment.

Best for: embedded monitoring applications such as tanks, pipelines, meters, equipment and remote sensors where low-power outbound data transmission is required.

Expert advice

Building connectivity into remote infrastructure?

A ready-to-deploy tracker and an embedded satellite transceiver solve very different problems. Tell us what equipment you need to connect, what data needs to be transmitted and where it will operate, and our team can help you identify the right hardware and network.

Utilities & energy FAQs

Connecting infrastructure beyond cellular coverage.

Satellite IoT provides another way to move data from infrastructure located beyond reliable terrestrial networks, from simple position reports to integrated telemetry and machine-to-machine applications.

What is satellite IoT?

Satellite IoT uses satellite connectivity to transfer data between remote equipment and another system or platform. It can be used where cellular, WiFi or fixed communications are unavailable or impractical.

How can satellite connectivity be used in utilities and energy?

Satellite connectivity can support applications such as remote asset monitoring, meter data, equipment status, tank monitoring, pipeline applications and telemetry from infrastructure located beyond terrestrial networks.

What is the difference between a satellite tracker and a satellite modem?

A tracker such as SmartOne C is a more complete device with positioning, power and monitoring functionality already built in. A modem or transceiver such as the Iridium 9603-N or Globalstar STX-3 is designed to be integrated into another piece of equipment or custom hardware.

What is Short Burst Data?

Iridium Short Burst Data, or SBD, is designed for transmitting relatively small amounts of data through the Iridium satellite network. It is commonly used in machine-to-machine, tracking, telemetry and remote monitoring applications.

What is the difference between simplex and two-way satellite data?

A simplex device is primarily designed to transmit information in one direction from the remote unit. A two-way system can both send and receive data, allowing information or commands to travel in both directions where supported by the application.

Can satellite modems be integrated into existing equipment?

Yes. Products such as the Iridium 9603-N and Globalstar STX-3 are designed as modules for integration into a host system. The final installation will require the appropriate power, antenna, control hardware and application development for the chosen modem.

Which satellite network should we use?

That depends on the application, deployment locations, message direction, data requirements, hardware design and expected operating costs. Our team can help assess the project and identify a suitable network and device before deployment.
