Rented Satellite Comms Gear for an Atlantic Crossing
Posted on October 11, 2021 by Rohit Bisht
The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2021
On December 12th, 2021, the island of La Gomera – the second-smallest of the Canary Islands off the west coast of Africa – will play host to the start of the annual Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge where 37 teams (including five solo entrants) will row 3,000 nautical miles across the Atlantic Ocean finishing at Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour, Antigua & Barbuda.
It’s a unique challenge that pushes people to their absolute limits. Sleep deprivation, 20ft waves, and salt sores are just some of the punishments they face. But being cut off from the wider world and the prolonged isolation are a major feature of an ocean voyage like this.
Part of any ocean-crossing rower’s onboard equipment has to be a selection of the best satellite communications for staying in touch with fellow competitors, race support teams, and friends and family back home. Devices like Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs), satellite phones or satellite trackers are designed to save lives in the event of an emergency. Their advanced, satellite GPS technology mean that their locations can be pinged directly to an online dashboard so rescue operatives can formulate a recovery mission.
But advanced equipment like this doesn’t have to cost the earth.
With Global Telesat Communications’ Rental Service, it doesn’t.
