What is a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB)?

A PLB is an emergency device that sends your distress signal and GPS location via satellite to rescue authorities, ideal for serious remote travel.

Is there a subscription required for a PLB?

No ongoing fees are needed for PLBs. Once bought and registered, they’re ready to use when needed in an emergency.

How do I register a beacon in the UK?

UK users must register their PLB or EPIRB with the UK Beacon Registry. This ensures rescue services have your emergency contacts and trip details.

What’s the difference between a PLB and an AIS MOB device?

A PLB contacts global rescue services via satellite, while AIS MOB beacons alert nearby ships via radio, both are useful, but serve different scenarios.

How long do beacon batteries last?

Most last 5-7 years in standby and at least 24 hours when activated. They must be serviced or replaced after use or expiry.
