The SPOT Connect is an invaluable tool for people who travel outside of network coverage as it makes it possible to use smart phones as satellite communicators whilst off the grid.

SPOT Connect have now introduced a new way to display maps for navigation and tracking of your locations while you are outside of network coverage called Map & Go. This great new feature allows users to initially download maps whilst in an area with internet access and then access them easily once they are off the grid.

map&goMap & Go allows users to navigate to a desired region and to adjust the map to the appropriate degree of zoom, enabling them to select maps that are relevant to their own specific journeys. Downloaded maps are stored in your device’s memory and when entering or exiting areas with mobile coverage, map views in SPOT Connect will transition seamlessly between online (Google) maps and user's personally created offline maps.

At the moment there are two types of maps available for users to download but SPOT LLC will add more in future releases. The maps that are currently available are the OpenStreetMaps that are most useful for basic navigation in relation to landmarks and the OpenCycleMaps that are specific to cycling routes but also provide some topographic maps for hiking or back country activities.

To create Offline Maps, first select the Settings view in the App and navigate to Map & Go. Tap on Map Type to choose a Map Source and then follow the relevant steps until the desired map has been downloaded.
