Yes. SPOT Gen4, SPOT X and SPOT Trace require an active SPOT service plan for their satellite functions. The available plans differ by device and include annual contract and more flexible seasonal options. We’d avoid publishing exact plan prices in the FAQ unless you intend to maintain them regularly, as service pricing can change.

No. This is an important one. SOS requires the device to be activated with an active SPOT subscription. If a Flex plan has been suspended, the SOS feature is also suspended. This is worth checking before every trip if your SPOT hasn't been used for a while.

On an SOS-capable SPOT device, activating SOS sends your location and emergency information to SPOT's Search & Rescue coordination service, which can then work with the appropriate local emergency responders. SPOT offers Flex plans intended for seasonal users as well as annual contract plans. Flex service can be suspended and resumed, although there is an annual Flex charge and a minimum active period. Crucially, all device functions, including SOS, are disabled while the service is suspended, so remember to reactivate the device before heading away.

Yes. SPOT Trace contains a vibration sensor and can issue a movement alert when an asset begins moving after being stationary. Once movement is detected, tracking resumes at your chosen interval so you can follow the asset through SPOT Mapping. Movement alerts can be sent to nominated contacts, making Trace useful for vehicles, boats, trailers and remote equipment.

No. SPOT Trace is an asset tracking device, not a personal emergency communicator. It provides features including tracking, movement alerts, low-battery notifications, status messages and power-off notifications, but it does not provide an SOS function. If you need personal emergency communication, look at SPOT Gen4 or SPOT X instead.

It depends on the device and service plan. SPOT Gen4 supports tracking intervals down to 5 minutes on its standard service, with an optional 2.5-minute Extreme Tracking service.
