Inmarsat is the world's leading provider of global mobile satellite communications providing voice and high-speed data services to almost anywhere on the planet - on land, at sea and in the air.

Inmarsat own and operate 11 satellites in geo-stationary orbit 35,786km above the Earth, controlled from their HQ in London via ground stations located around the globe. Inmarsat's communications services include BGAN (Broadband Global Area Network), GSPS (Global Satellite Phone Service), Fleet Broadband and Swift Broadband.

Iridium is the world's second largest provider of mobile voice and data communications services via satellite and the only commercial provider of communications services offering 100% global coverage.

Iridium's constellation consists of 66 low-earth orbiting (LEO), cross-linked satellites operating as a fully meshed network and supported by multiple in-orbit spares. It is the largest commercial satellite constellation in the world.

The design of the Iridium network allows data to be routed virtually anywhere in the world. Data calls are relayed from one satellite to another until they reach the satellite above the Iridium Subscriber Unit and the signal is relayed back to earth.

Thuraya is a United Arab Emirates based provider of mobile satellite voice and data services with coverage across most of Europe, the Middle East, North, Central and East Africa, Asia and Australia. Thuraya provides network service through three geosynchronous satellites and its products include satellite phones, fixed land phones and satellite broadband terminals.

Unlike satellite phones offered by other network providers, some Thuraya SIM cards will work in regular unlocked GSM telephones and ordinary GSM SIM cards can be used on the satellite network as long as the GSM provider has a roaming agreement with Thuraya. This allows subscribers to remain connected to their national mobile networks, and to access Thuraya's system whenever their preferred national network is out of reach.

Globalstar is a leading provider of mobile voice and data communications services globally via satellite. The Globalstar constellation of Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites enables communications across over 80% of the Earth's surface.

The reliability of Globalstar's network has been affected by the degradation of their satellite constellation in recent years. The result of this has been a restriction on the ability to make or receive calls at certain times during the day. In early 2013, Globalstar will complete the deployment of its second generation satellite constellation and customers can expect a progressive return to high reliability and service quality shortly afterwards.
